Communion

Fond memories of childhood often infuse our life with lessons that best describe our relationship with God.  At times as a young child I would be awakened early in the morning.  When this happened I knew exactly what to do.  I would quickly move out of my small bedroom that I shared with my brother, scamper across the cold kitchen floor, past the dinning room into the living room.  There I knew my father would be silently sitting in his favorite Lazyboy.

It was dad's daily routine to get up at 4:00 a.m. to read the Word and pray.  When he finished he would go out to the porch and get his morning newspaper to become current on the happenings of the world around him.  He welcomed me when I came to snuggle in his lap on those cold winter mornings.  It was always special to me to find him alone, climb up into his warm embrace, lay my small heard against his large chest and just rest in his arms.  I drew comfort from laying still with my ear to his chest quietly listening to his heart beat and his stomach growl.  It seemed like the safest, warmest place in the entire world.  In these silent moments together I felt one with my father.  It was a deep and lasting impression that helped to bond us into a strong and close relationship.

Years later while asking God for a closer relationship with Him I began to understand that there was far more to God than being the Father of the answered prayers.  He was as fascinating as He was powerful.  As my curiosity grew to know Him better I began to see what communion with God was all about.  It is the bonding time with the Creator.  Communion is not a time of talk, petition or mental learning.  It is heart to heart communication without words.

To commune with God is going daily to sit in His lap, laying your head again His chest and listen to the heartbeat of the Almighty.  Nothing needs to be said or done other than just resting in His arms.  The sound of His heart is the sweetest sound of all.  It is so assuring, so peaceful and so purposeful.  Enveloped in His love makes you strong and confident, so certain that all things will be OK.  Nothing can separate you.  You are His child.  Communion is hanging out with God, held tightly in His arms.

To the listening ear His heart strikes a clear and precious note, rich in spirit. The sound of His heart is the tuning fork for our life.  Without words it guides, protects and inspires all at once.   Each step we consider is established in approval as we match the sound of our Savior's melodious will.  More than the teachings, or council of friends the silent minutes alone with the Master speak deep within our soul and set our heart soaring in communion.  Humans are at rest in this secret place of the Most High.  Here we are complete and satisfied.   Here our trust in God abounds.  Communion is absolute stillness, safe in the Master's embrace.
